A Haven In Moscow

March 30

Sunshine

We have seen the sun since Wednesday afternoon.  Except for part of the day on Thursday when it was cloudy we are going for 6 days of sunshine!  I know that those of you from Texas or Krasnodar think that is no big deal but let me tell you we are rejoicing up here in Moscow.  This is the 2nd day we went strolling just to be able to enjoy the sunshine.  I was just saying how white the kids faces are, they look like ghosts, and now I have a slight burn on my face and they kids are looking pink.  I have never been so glad to see sunshine.  The temps are still in the 40's but I can handle it if we have more weather like this.

Smiling Blini

Take a look at this funny blini.  Bill found it when he came to the table for breakfast this past week.  I could not have done this if I tried!

Our Interesting Jack-O-Lantern

The kids decided they wanted to carve a pumpkin for Halloween.  Halloween is really not celebrated much here except in the ex-pat community.  So I went on a mission last week to find myself an big, orange, round pumpkin. I buy my produce from a little kiosk on the street so I asked the lady if she had any "tikva" (pumpkin) at her stand. She showed me something that looked like a butternut squash.  It was long and had tan skin.  I told her what I was looking for...a big, round, orange pumpkin.  She told me she did not expect to have any but that she would order one for me and to come back the next day after 11am.  I went back the next day and the lady was all smiles.  She was so excited to have gotten me a huge pumpkin.  Then she explained that she was not able to get an orange one.  Oh, and it was not round.  But it was big!  She was so pleased with herself.  I bought the big, tan, long pumpkin and took it home.  The kids laughed at the sight of it.  They still wanted to carve it so last night we did just that.  I have a few pictures in my album (taken by KayLynn) of the process.  The kids decided to lay it on it's side since there was no way to stand it up right!  Mr Jack-O-Lantern turned out pretty cute.

Snow in October

Bill was hoping for snow on his birthday a couple of weeks ago but it looks like it fell closest to Andrew's birthday which was only a few days ago.  We went to church and it was raining and snowing.  By the time we had finished lunch it had switched completely to snow.  When we got home it was beginning to look like a winter wonderland.  The kids (all 5 including Bill) are out in the white stuff right now.  It is the good packing snow that is great for snowball fights and snowmen.  I have to say that I have not seen one Russian child out in the snow, playing....I guess they know what is to come and do not think snow in October is fun!  We are still blissfully ignorant so we are enjoying it.  I enjoy it best by watching it from the window.  I have posted a couple of pictures of the kids in the snow.

The Market

Saturday, we went for an autumn stroll to the local park and stopped at a market on the way home.  The kids had fun collecting leaves and we had a good time posing for pictures.  At the end of our time we stopped by the open air market to pick up some fruit and veggies before heading home.  One of the venders, being very bored, made a design out of the dirt on the back of the truck that was parked near the market.  I have included a picture of it in the latest picture album.  You need to check it out, it was amazing.  I tried to get the artist to pose with his piece of art but he would not.  Right now the leaves are pretty and the weather is perfect.  We have had a whole week without rain.  We are soaking up the sun, knowing that soon we will not have much of it!
